The replacement concession agreement was signed today in the presence of the President of the Port Network Authority of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea, Stefano Corsini, and the top management of Piombino Industrie Marittime, represented by President Piero Neri and Chief Executive Officer Valerio Mulas.
The agreement completes the process initiated with the deed of submission already signed by the parties in September 2016. It provides for PIM to operate, until 2041, over a total surface area of 120,370 square metres, of which 17,040 square metres are at sea.
Upon signing the deed, an additional land area of 22,615 square metres was handed over to the company, adding to the 80,715 square metres already delivered in previous years for the construction of an initial section of the facilities.
With this important step, PIM is taking forward the project to create a multifunctional demolition, construction, and repair platform, with private investments exceeding 16 million by 2023 and a fully operational workforce of 80 people, not counting the positive effects on related industries.
Thanks to synergies with the port of Genoa—through San Giorgio del Porto and the Genova Industrie Navali Group—and the port of Livorno—through the F.lli Neri Group—the company already has numerous projects planned for ship dismantling, new construction, maintenance, and refitting.
“Today’s signing represents the conclusion of a process that has proven highly demanding for all parties involved: our Company, the Tuscany Region, the Port Network Authority, the Municipality of Piombino, and many technical bodies,” stated President Piero Neri, who added: “To build a multipurpose facility such as that of Piombino Industrie Marittime, it was necessary to address national and European environmental protection regulations for the first time. We did so with conviction to contribute, as far as it depends on us, to an environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable future.”
